Waterford Inst.
Pros:
- Non-profit company which is doing something that contributes to society
- My old boss works there (he's a great guy and I'd love to work with him again)
- 3.3% raise- not huge, but something
- Commute = less than 10 minutes
- I'd get to do analyst work again, which I really like
- Building is the old building where they used to shoot "Touched by an Angel"
Cons:
- Their development team is in Romania and so I'd work weird hours sometimes
- They don't let me work from home as much as 3M would
- Possibly be more travel (I don't like to travel much)
- Would mean changing jobs after only working for 3M for 6 months (doesn't look good on my resume)
- Less schedule flexibility
- Would have to start vacation accrual all over
Pros:
- Stable, well-known company
- Commute isn't bad (15 minutes)
- I like my boss, developer and DBA that I work with
- Pretty much self-managed
- Schedule flexibility (am able to work from home on occasion)
- Possibility for growth within the company
- Already have 2 weeks vacation accrued
- All development staff is located in the US
Cons:
- No clear career path has been defined
- A little less money, but not by much
- Not really doing a BA role and have moved to more of a Project Manager type role again
- On occasion, I get bored even when I ask for additional work
Hi Brooke! As your mother I knew you would always go far! Looks like the person that knows the least is making the first comment! If it were me I would stay with 3M. I always play safe-and you know what your current job is like, plus when you decide to start a family you can work from home sometimes! You seem to to happy now and that is worth millions in money! ReplyDeleteSista! Congrats on the job offer-that's awesome! I'm not much help because I don't know anything about your line of work. Although if you'd be working for your former boss who you like and would be getting a raise it sounds like a great opportunity. I have to agree with mom though about the working at home and also my friends who are moms have said it's easier having a job where you don't travel or work strange hours. I guess it all comes down to babies-hehe-doesn't it always? I'm sure you'll make the best decision-you always do:) Love you sooo much and congrats again!
ReplyDeleteI think when we were looking into kevin's job it came down to these factors the most:
ReplyDelete1. Money (but if the difference isn't that much then I wouldn't worry about a few thousand)
2. Personal Time: I think the amount of personal time off they give you is huge and I know you aren't thinking about it now, but you should ask about maternity leave...I got 8 weeks paid 100% (definitely sign up for short term disability) and that was like getting 8 weeks paid off. Huge.
3. Job Satisfaction: I think you really need to like what you do and who you work with. If you find your work boring now then I think that is a huge disadvantage; however, you don't know exactly (or do you since your old boss works there) what you would be doing at the Waterford place so you may not like it as much as you think. I raelly think liking what you do is the most important. And that includes being able to work from home.
4. Benefits: Mostly retirement and medical, the goverment job had way better retirement and medical plans.
Anyway, those are my thoughts!! I'll have kevin read it when he gets home. I HATE MAKING HARD DECISIONS, so I know what you are going through, so good luck!!!
